Cabinets 101

Three Steps

In your quest for cabinets, you will need to know a couple of pertinent things that will assist you in your cabinet shopping and purchases. You do not want to end up with something that you do not need, or need something for which you do not know how to ask. Let's face it; cabinets are a major investment for your home.

Here are a few questions that should be answered before designing and going to the expense of a new kitchen. Is the home in which the cabinets are to be installed, a permanent residence? Is the intended home only to be used for rental property, investment property, or is this home going to be used as a layover residence until you get into that home of your dreams? The answers to these questions could very well dictate how much you should spend on your cabinets.

For example, if this home were an investment property intended for resale, we would then recommend that you not design your dream kitchen - just yet. Instead, create a kitchen that is functional and convenient. Create a kitchen that uses a door style and species that are still attractive and appealing but is less expensive.

If these cabinets are for a rental property, you could look at it from a couple of different angles. First, acknowledge that the average renter could care less about your property. So buy a cabinet that looks nice and clean but would relatively be inexpensive to replace. Second, you can still choose a style that looks nice and clean but has more durability in terms of door, drawer box, and hardware fixtures. This would make it more difficult to damage. This will help you in determining which cabinet to shop for in terms of budget, desires, esthetics, and functionality.
